This is the initial stage where the dietitian collects and analyzes information about the individual’s nutrition status. The assessment includes:

  • Medical History: Considering any health conditions, medications, or treatments that may influence nutrition needs (e.g., diabetes, heart disease, allergies).

  • Psychosocial Factors: Evaluating lifestyle factors such as activity level, stress, work schedule, and psychological conditions that may affect eating behavior.

Based on the assessment data, dietitians identify nutrition-related problems that may affect health or disease management. These are framed as nutrition diagnoses, which might include:

  • Inadequate calorie intake or imbalanced nutrition
  • Risk of malnutrition or nutrient deficiencies
  • Altered digestion or absorption
  • Food allergies or intolerances The diagnosis helps pinpoint specific issues, guiding the intervention and dietary plan.

After identifying the nutrition problem, dietitians develop a tailored plan to address the issue. This step involves:
